Questions about kayaking in Overjissel
Kanoforum: Toertochten / Grootwater / Vlakwater

I´m planning to go to Overjissel to go kayaking this summer. Do you know any place where I can find a nice kayak to rent? Which places should we visit? We plan to take a four day long trip.

Any other advice for Swedish kayak-lovers who are going to the Netherlands?

Hi Marine,

First, welcome to Holland .

If you can't find anything you like, try to contact a few clubs in the area. For instance the Deventer Kano Vereniging (DKV). One of the members of this forum (Jurre) is a member overthere and he might be able to hook you up with some locals to give you some inside tips. The club might also be of help getting you some boats.

BTW: if you do get a chance, make sure you visit Deventer. It's an old city, part of the "Hanze"-cities (The "Hanze" was a medieval chain of cities trading all the way up to Scandinavia and down to the Mediteranean area). Lots of historical buildings and stuff to go and see.

Here's a list of boat rental shops in the Netherlands (it looks a bit dated, but might still be of help:

I just returned from a three days trip in the Weerribben and the Wieden. The weerribben is cultivated marshland, nowadays we consider it as nature. Verry beautifull but later in the season the reed(?) is getting higher so you won't see a thing. The old villages are worth visiting. The Wieden is more open water, bigger lakes, nature and cultivated marshland as well. The most famous village is Giethoorn, 'Venice of the north'.

When you like I can mail you the gps waypoints of my 80 km trip.

Renting a canoe/kayak can't be a problem in that area, you find more then one rentingplace in every village. First find your place to stay.

Excuse for my English, my spelling controll doen't work

I would really like to see you GPS-track. You can send it to marinea@hotmail.com

Are there any difficult parts (white water, "kraftwerks" and so on...) in this region?

You've got mail! It is a big mail but usefull I think.

In this tour you find some locks, cross them between 09.00 and 17.00. I had to carry over once (Blauwehand), you can avoid that one by taking a duller route.

Whitewater is possible when the wind is over 5Bf. It is completly flatwater. The only real river in the neighbourhood is the IJssel (note Overijssel means across IJssel) but that one is mostly about 3 km/h.

Well, I grew up in that area but I know for sure that there is no white water in the area
The spots they do describe are in Ireland, Germany and Austria

Must be the "playspot" at Junne then? Well, I grew up on the river IJssel and back then I only cared for canoe polo anyway

It would be great though to share more playspots in Holland, so Futala, come on, share your knowledge

Thanks a lot Bjorri for the GPS-tracks! Are there always a lot of boats in this region? I looked at the route in Google earth and I was really surprised that there were so many boats there (for example in the lake close to Giethoorn).

When do people have vacation in Holland? Is it "too" crowded in the canals then?

gepost door: bjorri op 19/05/07 20:38
Giethoorn is one of the major tourist places in the netherlands, yes it will be crowded during nice weather!

Again: when you want exiting kayakking don't go to The Netherlands. When you like floating around and/or realy make trips in beautifull nature you are in the right place.

Branding (seashore) is almost a three hour drive from Overijssel, even then you can't plan, sometimes it is a completly flat sea and some times the waves are to big (for me at least). When you stay some days near the coast you have a reasenable change to have some fun.
